2006
ALL- ONTARIO CATHOLIC SENIOR GIRLS

HISTORY

Twenty-nine years ago, at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Catholic Secondary School in North Bay, Ontario, the inaugural All-Ontario Catholics Senior Girls Volleyball Tournament was introduced. This tournament idea was initiated in 1978 by Peter O'Hare and Peter Gavan, a V.P. and teacher/coach, respectively. It grew out of OFSSA. There were only a few catholic schools making it to OFSAA so it was decided that they would offer a quality tournament that would give catholic high schools an opportunity to improve and experience a provincial tournament. It worked. The following year there were four catholic teams at OFSAA and one in the finals. What began as an eight team tournament featuring a selection of specific catholic secondary schools has since evolved into a two-day tournament open to as many as thirty-six teams representing catholic secondary schools from across the province. It is the most sought after and well-attended tournament of non-official standing by senior girls volleyball teams in Ontario catholic schools.

From its inception, this tournament has been about getting teams gathering for a common purpose. Founded on the basis of high spirit, good sportsmanship, and fair play, this tournament continues to build upon these traditions. This prestigious event serves as a prime example of the value associated with bridging school athletic programs, specifically volleyball, with cultural and spiritual development in support of the enhancement and encouragement of both athletic and personal advancement. If an athletic event can encompass fair play, sportsmanship, friendship, a feeling of success, and at the same time provide a venue for a high level of competition, IT JUST HAS TO BE A WORTHWHILE EVENT!
