F.A.Q. for University Applications
 General Questions
Frequently Asked Questions - University

1/ How do I find out where a university program is offered?

The website www.electronicinfo.ca is run by the university application centre and offers information on all universities and programs in Ontario. It includes information like recent admission averages. Students should also consult the websites of the universities that they are considering

2/ How do I apply to university?

Students apply online through the website www.ouac.on.ca  The deadline for applications is January 13th, 2010.

Current high school students will receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN), in early November, which allows students to log into the website. The guidance office will have transmitted biographical data and any grade 11 or 12 marks to the OUAC. Students may amend biographical data if necessary.

Students choose their university and program from drop down menus. Students may make 3 selections for a fee of $105.00. Additional choices may be made for a fee of $35.00 per choice. (Check with your guidance counselor if you are considering additional choices).

Please also be aware of and adhere to any specific instutional deadlines and additional application requirements.

3/ I’ve heard of “early acceptance”. What is that and how do I qualify?

When you apply to university, your mark data from grade 11 or any grade 12 courses gets transmitted to the universities which you have selected. Some universities may wish to offer a “conditional offer of admission” based on the marks which you currently present. These are generally offered only when a student’s marks far surpass the anticipated admission average. In short, there is nothing special about early admission. These offers are “conditional”, meaning that the student must maintain the required admission average and must complete all required prerequisite courses.

4/ What marks do the universities get?

The guidance office transmits marks at four times. In October, we send the grade 11 marks and any existing grade 12 final marks, along with the student’s biographical data. In February, the semester 1 final marks are sent along with the student’s semester 2 timetable. (This confirms for the universities that a student will be completing the prerequisites)  In April, semester 2 mid-terms are sent. Finally in early July, semester 2 final marks are transmitted.

5/ When will I hear from the universities?

Students will generally be offered admission at one of three times.

1)      A few are sent shortly after you apply ("early" acceptance, see above).

2)      In February, more offers are sent after the university receives your semester 1 marks.

3)      Most offers will be sent in early May.

May 25, 2010 is the latest date you should expect a response from a university. The earliest date by which Ontario universities may require a response to an offer of admission and a financial commitment of any kind is May 28, 2010.

6/ What happens if I don’t get accepted in the program of my choice?

Most universities offer “alternate offers of admission”. This means that they may offer admission to a related program. Also, if no offer is made, students may check the OUAC website in July to see which universities are still accepting applications and will detail the admission requirements. Students may then amend their online application to apply to these open programs

7/ What else can I do to get accepted?

Most universities allow students to submit “Personal Profiles” This is information about yourself which may assist in the decision about admission. (Eg. Community service, interests, knowledge of the program etc) Some programs actually require students to submit a Personal Profile.

If you are an “Identified Learner”, it would be in your best interest to contact the university about the process for admission and what accommodations they provide.

8/ How do I accept an offer of admission?

Acceptances are also done on the OUAC website. Students simply click on a box indicating acceptance. Students are able to change their minds and accept at other universities up until the deadline to accept,  which is May 28th.
